Project #1: Market Research (Pizzeria -- Website Redo)

PETER THOTTAM | GR DES 66 (Prof. Besler) | Section 4221

Objectives and Goals of the Redesign for the old Vincenzo’s Pizza site :

The current (pre-redesign) version of Vincenzo’s website is a straight lift from Yesterday’s Yahoo “Self-Design” or GeoCities type websites.   Its logo, layout and over all font & color choices are really poorly done and the size of the text, especially on the home index.html page is really difficult to read.   The logo itself with the Italian pizza guy with a moustache is alright and works (somewhat).  The site isn’t inviting and a site-visitor’s first inclination is probably to leave the website.  The menubar options are poorly laid out and the text on the buttons is difficult to read.  The site feels sloppy with no time, effort or thought put into it.  Even the photos of the pizzas taken are unattractive (definitely in no way shape or form ‘seductive’).  I think there are a total of 2 four facebook people who have liked the site (probably the owner and his wife).   Social media could definitely be reworked and the site’s geographic reach and menu options more cleary and richly presented.  An online ordering system would do wonders if that’s feasible.  My redesign’s goal is to radically change the interface and improve the photos & menu options’ emotional connetion with the site’s traffic & visitors.

My Target Audience for the Pizzeria:

I want to help the Pizzeria reach as many customers as possible.  I checked out the 183 reviews on Yelp (average rating: 4 out o5 stars!) and saw mostly positive feedback.    Yelp gives it a $$ -- so moderate costs and the reviews generally show a working class to slightly upper middle class customer base.  Pizzas are extra large helpings with some appealing specials and coupons (e.g. “Large for the price of a medium”).   The inner décor is really nice but the current website does it ZERO justice.  I spoke with Richie Pauley (the pizza chain’s owner) and he said he’s open to improving the site.  He just slapped it together – via someone he knew – a couple of years ago for a couple of hundred.  He doesn’t want to spend any real money though which may be an issue.
One nice review : “This is the best pizza I've ever had.  I've been everywhere and anywhere up and down the so cal, probably 200 different places.  I mean, look at me, you can tell pizza is my favorite hahaha.  ANYWAYS, this is the best pizza.  The crust stays soft but NOT UNDERCOOKED, and the top is toasty and crispy.  The cheese melts all over but isn't the messiest either and is easy to control.  The meat they use is top grade and the tomato sauce is perfectly seasoned.  for 25$ I got a large pizza that was loaded to the brim with two toppings and it was as big as my stove-top.  I'm fat and could only eat two of those huge slices.  I usually eat 75% of a dominoes medium deep-dish by myself.  This place is cheaper than dominoes/pizza hut and has way better pizza than dominoes.  The only thing I can say is that I love the people that run Big Al's but Vincenzo's is gonna put them out of business.”

The current website assume local access and knowledge already about Vincenzo’s Pizza and its offerings.  The menu targets existing customers rather than taking advantage of social media and expanding the potential customer pool.

Scope of the Project

I think the current Vincenzo’s pizza website is pretty ugly and needs a radical overhaul and want to really improve the visual layout and photos. I think the website would benefit greatly from better social media integration (esp. Facebook and Yelp).
I also really would like to push the food’s fantastic appeal to its customers and the great physical layout and environment of the restaurant as well as its friendly staff.   One of my resdesign’s primary goals will be to help create more foot traffic and phone calls to the restaurant for pizza delivery orders!

Competitive Analysis:

Overall Style/Look --- and Competitive Site analysis

Vincenzo’s Pizza’s website’s current look is ‘antique’ at best and unbelievably ugly at worst.   I looked at other pizza website for a competitive anlaysis and think it can be greatly improved.   For example, Numero Uno’s pizza website is much better at this URL (check it out): http://www.numerounosantaclarita.com/.

Or, alternatively, Pizza Del Sardo at : http://pizzadelsardo.com/.

ORIGINAL ASSIGNMENT:

Project Brief

Complete the following research before our next class:
  • Analyze and study the existing website you’re redesigning for the midterm/final project.
  • Post your thoughts about what works and what doesn’t work about the current design.

Competitive Analysis

Choose 3-4 websites that are competitor sites for your client (majority of the sites analyzed need to be responsive) and analyze the websites in the following areas: visual design, content, “call to action” on home page, navigation, functionality, community building (social media) and any other areas that you think play an important part in the redesign.

Goals + Target Audience

Determine Goals for the website and define the Target Audience. What are the client’s business goals for the site. For example, to bring more customers to the restaurant. To increase their catering business, etc. Who’s the Target Audience? Remember: When you try to design for everyone, you design for no one. To determine answers to these questions, use your best judgement based on your research.
  • What questions need to be answered in order to complete this project?
  • What tasks do we need to complete in order to successfully design this website?
  • What issues need to be solved?
  • What is our schedule?
Post all of your thoughts, ideas, findings, and research references to your student research blog. Email me the link to your blog post before 6:29 p.m. on Thursday, March 2nd, 2017.
